The Great American Smokeout (GASO) is an event created by the American Cancer Society and supported all across the nation to encourage tobacco users to become empowered and face their addiction. The Great American Smokeout will take place Thursday, November 19. In support of the event, Weigel Health Promotions is hosting an entire week of events:
Monday, 11/16 – 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Campbell Student Union Lobby. Tabling for the Great American Smokeout begins! We will have a Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitor at the table all week, stop by to give the machine a try. Smokers, whether they do it regularly or are “social smokers,” will be surprised at the lasting effects of cigarettes!
Also starting Monday and lasting until Thursday, anyone is free to guess the weight of the cigarette butts in the glass case (in the Student Union by the entrance to the grill and ice cream). To make a guess, like our page on Facebook or follow us on Instagram and make a guess on the photo of the cigarettes. On Friday, we will announce the actual weight and the closest guess will win a prize!
Tuesday, 11/17 – 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Campbell Student Union Lobby. At the Weigel Health Promotions table today, we will be having an activity to show how much money is spent on tobacco use. We will also continue to have the CO monitor at tabling and guessing of the cigarette butt weight.
Wednesday, 11/18 – 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Campbell Student Union Lobby. Today’s Great American Smokeout activity is a Tobacco-Free photo project. Visit the table and get your picture taken with fun props. Bring your friends for a photo op, guess the weight of the cigarettes, and try out the CO monitor.
Thursday, 11/19 – Day of the Great American Smokeout
11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Campbell Student Union Lobby. Great American Smokeout Information and activities. This will be your last chance to try out the CO monitor and guess the weight of the cigarette butts to win the prize.
Chartwells will also be cooking up some delicious Smokeout smoked foods in support of the event. Look for these options in the dining hall.
6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Ketchum Hall 118, Horizon Therapy Dog. Therapy animals are an excellent way to relieve stress, whether it’s from quitting tobacco or approaching the end of the semester. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Friday, 11/20 – 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Ketchum Hall 111, Tobacco-Free Policy Workshop. This workshop is designed to educate students, faculty, and staff about Buffalo State’s tobacco-free policy. Participants are also given the opportunity to become a Tobacco-Free Ambassador.
If you or someone you know is looking for help quitting tobacco, the resources at our table will be a great start. You can also call and set up an appointment at the Weigel Health Center by calling (716) 878-6711 to get help quitting, including nicotine replacement therapy if needed.
