Buffalo State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletics Department, and Weigel Wellness Center are hosting an event on campus called Around the World for Yeardley (known in previous years as Yards for Yeardley).
The One Love Foundation was started in honor of Yeardley Love, a lacrosse player at the University of Virginia who was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend just three weeks before her college graduation. Started in December 2014 by three young women on the Boston College and University of Virginia lacrosse teams, Yards for Yeardley has become a community awareness and activation event through which individuals across the country have rallied to honor Yeardley Love and support One Love's mission to end relationship abuse by educating young people about healthy and unhealthy relationships. Yards for Yeardley can take many forms-whether it's running, biking, walking, swimming or even roller blading.
Buffalo State Athletics is holding this event so we can empower people to trust their gut and act when they feel something is off. This year, together with 11 other SUNY schools, the 10 SUNYAC schools are uniting to complete 50 million yards to go "Around the World" for Yeardley. There are 21 collegiate institutions that are participating in New York State, so each school needs to walk 2.38 million yards to get to 50 million yards!
This year we are making it a campus-wide event so we could spread more awareness about domestic violence to the entire Buffalo State campus. Please join us in eradicating domestic violence and teaching people to #lovebetter.
